DAN SHAUGHNESSY IV WAS BORN IN STAVANGER, NORWAY IN 1988. AFTER LIVING IN SWEDEN AND ENGLAND, DAN MOVED TO HOUSTON, TEXAS WITH HIS FAMILY WHERE HE WAS INTRODUCED TO STICK WELDING AND OTHER VARIOUS TOOLS IN THE METAL SHOP WHICH CAUGHT HIS ATTENTION. AS A CHILD, DAN ALWAYS HAD AN ATTRACTION TO FORM, STRUCTURE AND ABSTRACTION. EVENTUALLY, THIS FASCINATION BECAME A SEARCH FOR ARTISTIC FORMS AND UNDERSTANDING THE QUALITIES METAL BESTOWS. HE WOULD LATER ATTEND THE SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO. DAN’S MOVE TO CHICAGO IN 2008 OPENED NEW AVENUES FOR EXPLORATION IN METAL SCULPTING. ON 2011, DAN BEGAN A LONG TERM PROFESSIONAL LIAISON WHILE WORKING AS AN APPRENTICE FOR CHICAGO SCULPTOR, BOYAN MARINOV. IT WAS THIS EXPERIENCE THAT PROPELLED HIS CAREER AS A PROFESSIONAL SCULPTOR WHILE ASSISTING MARINOV WITH THE CREATION OF SIX LARGE SCALE FIGURATIVE PIECES AND EVENTUALLY BECOMING STUDIO FELLOW OF ANOTHER CHICAGO SCULPTOR, MIKE HELBING. BOTH OF THESE EXPERIENCES HAVE BEEN INFLUENTIAL IN HIS CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AS A LOCAL CHICAGO SCULPTOR. DAN CONTINUES TO COLLABORATE IN THE CHICAGO SCULPTOR COMMUNITY AS INVITED JUROR TO LOCAL SHOWS, AND IN PRODUCTION ASSISTANCE TO TERRY KARPOWICZ, AS WELL AS BOYAN MARINOV AND MIKE HELBING, AND OTHER SCULPTOR AFFILIATED TO CHICAGO SCULPTURE INTERNATIONAL.
NORTH STAR
“The North Star”, are meant to guide the viewer into this realm of imagination, not tempted by reality. As this North Star exists in “space,” this diamond shaped form appears to levitate, with a stainless-steel reflective sphere boldly present in it’s in center, reflecting the space around it. “The North Star” is a symbol of this opposition to reality, using both positive and negative spaces to create a visibly magnetic force, like its name.
